Media and the Manifestation of Evil

I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. (Rom.16:19).

Abstain from every form of evil. (1Thess.5:22).

ARE YOU FASCINATED with evil? It’s a strange question to ask Christians, yet there’s a general fascination with evil in our culture.

Just consider all the modern films that depict magic and demonic activity. Bookstores have sections dedicated to the occult. Halloween has turned from childhood fun to big business and gore. Heavy metal and rap music spew out lyrics that celebrate violence and death. And television pumps darkness into millions of homes.

The manifestation of evil has exponentially increased in the media. In the past, one would be hard-pressed to find an occult section at a bookstore, let alone bookstores entirely devoted to that. Explicitly violent or sexual lyrics used to only be found in fringe music, not mainstream. No one would have imagined the types of television series that air now. And films always had evil villains, but rarely with the eerie intensity and darkness that comes forth today. If they were like that they were only in horror films.

In our day it shows up in action films or even films with redemptive values. Bad guys are no longer just bad, they are demonic. Death can’t be left to the imagination, it has to be graphic.

Why Samson?

Why, of all people, was Samson mentioned as an example of faith in Hebrews 11:32? The book of Judges records his lying and self-indulgence. As a Nazirite, he was supposed to be completely consecrated to God, yet he had no qualms about breaking the law and eating from an unclean carcass. He even pursued […] Continue reading →

The Fiery Serpent

The fiery serpent in the wilderness was a shadow of what Jesus would accomplish on the cross: And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it, shall live. And […] Continue reading →

Are You a Jeep or a Rolls Royce?

“Behold, all things have become NEW!” We like New. It is a great selling point in advertising! When we buy something new, we want to keep it new for as long as possible. Maybe after it gets old, we will let someone borrow it or care less about it. In Christ, however, we are […] Continue reading →

Be Clean

Here is my attempt at being poetic: Faith is the faucet that turns on the shower of God’s grace. Ok, so I’m not Shakespeare! But think about it. In a normal shower, the water is already in the pipes, it just needs to be released. This is the way it is with God’s love, […] Continue reading →

Sin Boldly?

“BE A SINNER, and sin boldly…” This may be a shocking statement, but what makes it more shocking is who it came from. It would appear to be straight from the devil himself! But wait- this advice actually came from none other than the great reformer, Martin Luther. Martin Luther was the famous monk […] Continue reading →

Freedom in Christ

a vision for missions What is the state of sin in a believer’s life? The Bible reveals that the Christian is victorious, freed from sin, and alive to righteousness. It is not just that Jesus saves believers from judgment, but the Word expressly says He will save His people from their sins (Matt.1:21). Sin shall not have dominion over […] Continue reading →
